Quarantine project: Kitchen and living area renovation

We used Ikea kitchen cabinetry: Matte grey-green Bodarp Style for lowers and open shelving and IKEA Grimslov off-white for the uppers.

We do keep in mind that going about things with a DIY mindset does require a considerable about of extra obstacles to overcome. Even with that mindset; I sadly (b/c I love IKEA) have to say; our experience with purchasing cabinets with IKEA was not great, like really not great.

In my opinion, the cabinets were A LOT of work and gave us a good amount of troubleshooting, unless you are a skilled handywoman; I would not recommend doing DIY IKEA cabinets (they do have an install option that we did not use).

Also, we received only portions at a time (3 doors one time, then one lower base, then some trim….and so on) over a 5 month period making multiple trips and getting multiple deliveries. I imagine the incompleteness of getting the product had a lot to do with supply chain/covid issues which is prob not IKEAs fault. However, there wasn’t good management and communication given to us by IKEA.

We’d have to call and re-order and then call again to see if the products (and there was like 400 pieces to put together…you know how IKEA is) were in, because they didn’t hold it for us; it was first come first served? WTF? We never did receive some items and had to figure out how to find them elsewhere. I could go on but I won’t; ultimately, the process of working with IKEA was super long, confusing and frustrating.

Despite all this, we do love the final product and it’s done now and we are moving on to a happy mindset about the completed product.

Thank goodness Dean is super experienced and figured it all out despite these obstacles. I’d like to think I am a pretty capable helper with his direction but without his lead, this whole project would have began and ended with a measly fresh coat of paint.
